Double Arch & Shooting Star

Landscape Arch and the Milky Way Galaxy give a planetary perspective at night in Arches National Park.  Landscape Arch is the longest natural arch on Earth with a span of 290 feet.  It is the true “Delicate Arch.”

More Information:

Landscape Arch in Arches National Park is the longest arch in North America at 306 feet long.  It is so long and slender that it is only 6 feet in diameter at it’s thinnest point.  It surely wont last much longer and it has been shedding rockfalls dramatically for several years now.  IMO it is by far the most dramatic of all arches on Earth.  It is so Delicate that I think that it should swap names with the equally famous “Delicate Arch” (the one on the Utah license plate).  This image was very difficult to take because it is practically impossible to illuminate the whole arch.  So on a very cold November evening a friend and I accomplished this shot by sweeping the light back and forth (like mowing the lawn!) during the 30 second exposure.  The result is that it appears to have been illuminated completely but in fact we never saw the arch illuminated but only one small dot of light moving back and forth during the exposure.
